What is the difference between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Department of Defence (APS)?

The ADF is Australia’s military force, incorporating the following units:

Australian Defence Force Headquarters
Joint Capabilities Group
Joint Operations Command

As well as the services: Navy, Army and Air Force.

The Department of Defence is the government department that supports the military through policy, administration, capability development and other essential services.

Together, they make up Australia’s Defence portfolio.

Will I be deployed / enlisted into the Defence force?

No.

Whilst the The Department of Defence (APS) works along-side the ADF, they do not perform the same deterrence duties and are not requested to deploy as these are ADF functions.

Should you accept an offer within The Department of Defence (APS side), you will be an Australian Public Servant and not an ADF member.
